VOLUNTEERING

Open Door Meal Ministry in Allston needs volunteers every Monday evening
(there is a special need in the summer). The official hours of the
project are 4:30 pm-7:30 pm, but it is fine to come anytime and leave

meals, coffee and tea to the people who arrive for dinner (6-7 pm) or
just stay behind the scenes doing set-up and clean-up. It is a very
rewarding, hands-on, face-to-face way to serve the community with
(mostly) other Orthodox Christians—we even chant the Our Father together
before the meal begins. Church info can be found at http://hrocboston.org. Questions? Please contact Liz Straghalis atliztutella@gmail.com phone 617-974-5005, or Tiffany Conroy at trattus1@gmail.com.

SCRIPTURE READINGS for February 20:
Epistle: St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20
Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are
helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by
anything. … Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is
outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you
not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you,
which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a
price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to
God.
Gospel: Luke 15:11-32
The Lord told this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the
younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of
property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not
many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his
journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in
loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in
that country, and he began to be in want. …”

INSIGHT
On the third Sunday of preparation for Lent, we hear the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32).
Together with the hymns of this day, the parable reveals to us the time
of repentance as man's return from exile. The prodigal son, we are
told, went to a far country and there spent all that he had. A far
country! It is this unique definition of our human condition that we
must assume and make ours as we begin our approach to God. A man who has
never had that experience, be it only very briefly, who has never felt
that he is exiled from God and from real life, will never understand
what Christianity is all about. And the one who is perfectly "at home"
in this world and its life, who has never been wounded by the nostalgic
desire for another Reality, will not understand what is repentance.
…
It is very easy indeed to confess that I have not fasted on prescribed
days, or missed my prayers, or become angry. It is quite a different
thing, however, to realize suddenly that I have defiled and lost my
spiritual beauty, that I am far away from my real home, my real life,
and that something precious and pure and beautiful has been hopelessly broken
in the very texture of my existence. Yet this, and only this, is
repentance, and therefore it is also a deep desire to return, to go
back, to recover that lost home.
-Alexander Schmemann, Great Lent
The
human soul is a spirit created by God, and only in God, who has created
it in His own image and likeness, can it find contentment and rest,
peace, consolation and joy. Once separated from Him, it seeks for
satisfaction among created things, and feeds itself on passions, on
husks, food for pigs; but finding not its true repose, nor its true
satisfaction, it dies at length of hunger. For spiritual food is a
necessity to the soul.
- St. Tikhon of Zadonsk
At
least from this time forth arise and do not put off, my beloved soul,
holy repentance, contrition of heart and penance for your sins. Putting
them off year after year, month after month, day after day, you will not
at all desire with your whole heart to repent, and you will not find
one to have compassion on you.
- St. Paisius Velichkovsky
How
can a man call God just when he comes across the passage on the
prodigal son who wasted his wealth with riotous living, how for the
compunction alone which he showed, the father ran and fell upon his neck
and gave him authority over all his wealth? (Luke 15:11 ff.).
None other but His very Son said these things concerning Him, lest we
doubt it; and thus He bore witness concerning Him. Where, then, is God’s
justice, for whilst we are sinners Christ died for us! (cf. Rom. 5:8). But if here He is merciful, we may believe that He will not change.
- St. Isaac the Syrian, Homily 60
