OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE

There are a number of ways you can help the Church, your fellow worshippers and those in need.  Consider serving in one of these ways:

BE A GREETER -  The Parish Council is continuing the Greeter Program, similar to other churches, to greet and aid parishioners, guests and visitors into the Church each Sunday.  As a Greeter, you will welcome people into the Church and help to direct visitors upstairs to the Liturgy, as well as keeping an eye on the Vestibule, hallways and entrance ways during church, arriving at Church at 9:45 am.  Greeting time ends when Communion starts.  We need volunteers.  If you would like to be a Greeter, a Sign-Up Sheet is posted on the Church Bulletin Board.  If you have any questions, please contact Buddy by e-mail buddy@cjmabardy.com or call him at 781-729-6303. “I was a stranger, and you invited me in………”   (Matthew 25:35)

LITURGICAL SERVICE - Each Sunday, members of the congregation are needed to read the Epistle and assist during Communion by holding the Communion Cloths and Holy Bread Baskets.  All Orthodox Christians in the Parish are welcome and encouraged to participate. We usually need one Epistle  and six people to hold cloths and baskets.  If you would like to read the Epistle or assist during Communion, please contact Jeff Wasilko, 781-820-0882, jeffw@smoe.org

COFFEE HOUR – People are needed every week to provide coffee, juice and cookies, or more if desired, and set it up Sunday morning. To sign up for an available Sunday, please put your name on the signup sheet on the bulletin board outside the Hall or call Marilyn Robbat in the Parish Office and she will write your name in. If you need any help with figuring out what to bring or do, check the list below the signup sheet (also printed in the Bulletin), or ask Marilyn at secretary@stmaryorthodoxchurch.orgor 617-547-1234.

SCRIPTURE READINGS for October 9:
Epistle: St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:16 - 7:1
Brethren, we are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people…”  Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-16
… As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.

INSIGHT

This [raising of the widow’s son] is one of three resurrections performed by our Lord as recorded in the Gospels (see also Luke 8:41-56; John 11:1-44). They confirm the promise given to the prophet Ezekiel that God will one day open the graves and raise all the dead (Ezk 37:1-14). Many people have exercised authority over the living; only the Son of God “has power over both the living and the dead.” While Christ has power through His word alone, (Jn 11:43), here He also touched the coffin to show that His very body is life-giving. This event prefigures Christ’s own Resurrection. As Mary would weep for Jesus at the Cross, yet her tears would be turned to joy by the Resurrection, here a widow’s only son is raised from the dead, putting an end to her weeping.
   - The Orthodox Study Bible, footnote to Luke 7:11-17

As Shepherd, O Savior and Creator, Thou has snatched from the fierce and all devouring wolf a man that had been four days dead; and through him, in Thy power as Lord, Thou has revealed beforehand the universal glory of Thy Resurrection on the third day.
   - Lazarus Saturday Matins Canon, Ode 4

If indeed the flesh possesses no useful function, why did Christ heal it? And why, in particular, did he go so far as to raise the dead to life? What was his purpose? Was it not to show us how the resurrection was to take place? How, moreover, did he raise the dead? Was it souls or bodies? Clearly, it was both together.
   - Justin

How could humanity on earth, enslaved by death, recover its wholeness?  It was necessary to give to dead flesh the ability to share in the life-giving power of God.  Now the life-giving power of God is the Word, the only Son.  He it was then whom God sent to us as Savior and Liberator … He, though he is Life by nature, took a body subject to decay in order to destroy in it the power of death and transform it into life.
   - Cyril of Alexandria, Homily on Luke
